I think the issues facing the climate are the biggest and also the most important challenge for the engineers in the future. Reducing the amount of carbon in our atmosphere is an incredibly difficult challenge. The Carbon Mitigation Initiative is an example of people trying to find solutions to the carbon and climate problem. They came up with a neat activity that really demonstrates the scale of the carbon mitigation challenge and the tradeoffs involved in planning climate policy : http://cmi.princeton.edu/wedges/pdfs/teachers_guide.pdf .
What do you think is the best way to reduce the amount of carbon in the atmosphere?

I think that energy is the biggest challenge that’s already here, then fighting disease, then escaping from Earth before it’s consumed by the sun – basically all the challenges that are facing humanity will be solved by engineers!

Also, at some point in the near future we’re going to have to stop AI from destroying humanity.

Storing energy. Engineers have come up with a number of renewable ways to make energy but we have no way of storing it, or efficiently transporting the energy to where it needs to be consumed. The engineer that comes up with a solution to store energy is going to be a very important and famous person 🙂
